Moments of Gratitude

Me and my party animals at the Corn Maze in Hondo

I had the best 60th birthday that anyone could ever have.  I would have to sift the week-end with a #4 sieve to find something that wasn’t perfect.  I finally settled on my little sister, MA, who looks so stinking cute in the new clothes she can wear since her weight loss that I had a hard time not feeling jealous.  I succumbed to the feeling but I couldn’t hate her because she’s so sweet.

Oh!  The other thing to criticize is that MA’s 60th birthday is in 2-1/2 years and we will never be able to top my birthday festivities.  We will try but we set the bar too high.

The festivities started 60 days before my birthday with a slew of special memories and good wishes from family members and friends.  The idea originated with my daughter GE and my niece Claire who managed to assemble 60 days worth of memories.  Every day for 60 days, Claire emailed me a new one.  Tears would spring unbidden, chuckles would evolve into belly laughs.  I never knew what the Inbox would hold.

I ended up with a sense of wonder that I could have such an incredible group of family and friends.  How lucky and blessed I am!  This love paints every aspect of my life and I am so grateful for it.

And that’s when the idea for this blog sneaked out.  I decided to write a blog for the next 30 days on so many of the things that grace my life.  As a sober 12 step recovery member, I often stop and write lists of the things that I am grateful for having.  I do it as a daily practice when I am slogging through a challenging time in my life.  So very easy for this alkie to see only the roof leak and not the refrigerator full of food.

I picked topics for each of the next 30 days.   I stole some from similar websites:  days of and net and org as well,   Some originated from my daily gratitude lists.  It isn’t comprehensive enough to cover all the blessings, but it will keep my heart focused on grace as I go into the holidays and 2013.

Here’s to 30 days of blogs with a focus on thanksgiving!
